When I was a kid of around twelve-thirteen I started kayaking, hiking, and practising primitive outdoor skills. I remember pushing myself to camp alone in autumn forests, sleep in a lean-to with snow falling through the pine branches that served as a roof, and one time loosing my way so I ended up trudging on for hours with a heavy backpack on unsteady ice. One of my proudest moments was when I made it through 52 kilometers on another freezing day, despite my right leg cramping up the last 5 kilometers due to the cold and the load of the backpack.
There are more memories like this that explains why I got neck problems when I was around 16-17 years old that made it very hard to carry loads on my shoulders. By that time my outdoors interests got eclipsed by other training and life at large. Funnily enough it was only certain strains that caused my neck to fail so I was still perfectly capable to cope with standing on my head and other shenanigans involved in breakdancing. Fast forward 10-15 years and my neck had recovered to the point that I picked up my outdoor interest in 2012. I literally brushed off my Rockport hiking shoes that I bought when I was 16 years old and they were good to go. Rather than sleeping in a tent or under the stars I now prefer to sleep in a hammock.
