Sculptures 2017–2018 At one level I just like sculpting human figures and hammering metal. On another level this is about ruthlessly scrutinizing and making conscious our ideals that we sacrifice ourselves for. Maybe to the point of reconstructing something less ideal but more real. Life sized, forged and fabricated from steel. Life sized, forged and fabricated from steel. This sculpture is called Tension and is a low key note about the day to day sacrifice for taking the small steps that also count for something. Life sized, forged from steel. This one is about crashing and burning and how this is sometimes a sacrifice for rising again transformed. This, the right side of a man’s back and arm is made from bronze and steel and bronze fuzed to steel. It has been colored by going through the fire in the forge. Life sized. There are archeological finds of depictions of animal masks in Scandinavia from around 0 to 1000 AD but almost no actual finds. This mask captures the spirit of those depictions as a way to explore the balance between our civilized, domesticated, personas and our primal past. Our biology craves comfort, but when we find ourselves with unlimited access to it the welfare diseases set in. We crave comfort but actually require discomfort. We seek safety behind our desks occupied by technology, bureaucracy and social masks. But we need to experience real stress and real fear to reset our long term stress and abstract anxiety. The wolf has always seemed so cliché and kitchy to me but now I appreciate why it is such a valuable symbol. Forged from steel. The mask is made to be worn either lowered or higher on the head. Forged from steel. The mask can be worn lowered to cover the face or higher like a wolf pelt. Once lowered the mask restricts eye sight and breathing. When carried high it forces you to stand up straight. Forged from steel. The mask is worn with this hoodie made of wool. A wolf in sheep’s clothing. Leather tooled and painted to look like birch bark. Leather tooled and painted to look like birch bark.
